Vintage Storage for Your Modern Jewels..

I was looking through one of the million bridal magazines (I know, more bridal stuff!) that I am rapidly collecting the other day and came upon a unique ring idea that I thought was very fitting for my (or your!) vintage wedding.  Now, usually I don’t read to many of the articles in these magazines because I tend to just get entirely to overwhelmed with ideas and end up confusing myself.  I sort of only buy the magazines for the pictures! Is that bad of me? Anyway, I happened to glance over a particular article discussing ring bearer ideas and my eye was caught by a pair of antique ring boxes.  Interest was definitely peaked, so naturally I began to investigate.   And I was stoked with the information that the writer was giving me!  Her uber-creative idea for a vintage wedding was to put the wedding rings in antique/vintage ring boxes and have the ring bearer carry these down the aisle to the bride and groom.  Even cuter was the idea to put these ring boxes on a piece of crumbling brick or rustic wood to complete the vintage look.  I thought that this was such a creative twist on the traditional ring on the pillow get up and very fitting for my personal style.  Truthfully, my wedding isn’t exactly conventional by any means and it’s fun to put my mark on even the smallest of things!  So, with this in mind I am on the search for some one-of-a-kind ring boxes!!  Check out some of the ones I’ve already found! (And ladies these shouldn’t just be used for weddings!  Stuff your own fabulous jewelry in them!!)

What caught my eye about this little trinket is the beautiful raised cabbage rose against the white hinged lid.  Not to mention the delicate raised scrolls that line the silver metal box.  So romantic and lovely.  An award winning combination that oozes vintage and immediately captures the imagination. Perfect for storing wedding rings in!  Or any of your favorite rings!  Vintage Ring box is from the 70s and supplied by MikasTreasures.

A true gem. This Antique Blue Velvet (yes, velvet!) Ring Box dates to the early 1900’s where it used to hold a very special ring. Talk about a dream!  Imagine housing your jewelry (or wedding rings!) in a piece of history where over a hundred years ago it was used to profess one’s love for another.  ::Sigh:: Yes, I know, super mushy.  But, besides the history, just look at it.  Deep blue velvet,  satin interior and a dainty Mother of Pearl open/close button.  How can you not fall in love with it! (From VintageBroad)

I love how this Vintage Silver Ring Box from AntiqueCombray has a turn of the century feel to it, but is modernized by the addition of a brown gemstone top.  From the 80s, it appeals to that antique/vintage enthusiast who likes their collectibles with a punch of eclecticism. I know I do.  And while it’s easier to put a twist on clothing, sometimes it becomes a bit more challenging when doing it with accessories.  But, fortunately with this punkster ring box, no work need be done! Just enjoy!

If you love anything having to do with the 60s, then you will be enamored with this Vintage Ornate Ring Box from SellOriginals.  My favorite thing about besides it antique hue and intricate floral design?  The heart.  It adds a whimsical character to the already personable box.  Not to mention the delicate dotted outline which makes your eye draw immediately to the box.  I also think the legs are adorable and definitely unusual!  It reminds me of antique bathtubs with the clawed legs!  Another fun fact? This box is lined in old red felt. Very fitting, don’t you think?

Unique.  That is probably the best word to describe this Wooden Jewelry Box from WillowontheWater.  Artfully crafted from two different pieces of wood, this ring box was made in the 1970s and has a smooth, glossy finish.  I love that it looks like a treasure box, considering that you are putting your own “treasure” in it.  So cute!  Perfect gift for the friend who loves a more modern approach to vintage!

Another amazing gem kept alive and well from the 1930s.  This Antique Mosaic Ring Box from HappyMoonDesigns was handmade in Italy.  Which, judging by the intricate mosaic design, you could have guessed on your own!  It was the mosaics that drew me to this one-of-a-kind box. I’ve never seen anything like this before and coming from someone who owns a ton of jewelry (and jewelry boxes) that says a lot!  It may be that work like this just isn’t done anymore or just the fact that it may only be done in Italy.  Whatever the reason, this box is a unique find and if I were you, I’d pick it up real quick!

Weekend Wardrobe Goes Downtown

I have to tell you, this “Weekend Wardrobe Post”  is by far my favorite!  My boyfriend and I went downtown and I had so much fun taking pictures of all the old buildings, store fronts and the Intracoastal Waterway.  I noticed things I never did before just because I was looking for interesting things to snap.  Rustic signs hanging on crumbling brick facades, century old bars and historical markings.  Not to mention the antique stores and the colossal spanish style mansions.  I could walk for hours just looking at those circa 1800 houses.  It’s like walking through a Jane Austen novel, except you’re in the US and not among rolling hills! And through my mini treasure hunt, I found time to take pictures (well, my boyfriend did!) of my outfit.  Hard when all I wanted to do was get an ice tea and sit for hours reading “Angel of Darkness” in an old bookstore.  But, seeing as I was out and about I relished in the opportunity to make a post out of my downtown adventure! My Vintage Obsession..

There is one vintage accessory that I will NEVER tire of and no matter how many I purchase, could never stop! What is this jewel that has so much power over me you ask that I am so compelled to give in? Well, my friends, believe it or not my vintage obsession is the small, yet powerful Turquoise Ring!

A flashback to the 60s and 70s, this miniscule accessory still screams free love and peace! With colors ranging from pale blues to the dark blue-greens reminiscent of deep ocean water, turquoise is a stone that speaks to its wearer.  It’s magnetic and stunning and makes its presence know once slipped onto your finger.  And I have to tell you, this jewelry speaks to me like no other.  It connects me back to Earth and Nature, reminding me of my Indian heritage.  I feel instantly empowered when I wear this stunning stone.  And coming  in hundreds of shapes and sizes, it makes it virtually impossible to choose only one!  Which is the predicament that I constantly find myself in! A truly independent and unique stone, you have to be one fierce Fashionista to sport this heavy rock! Check out some of these killer turquoise stones I sniffed out!

I love this style of ring! The long finger length ring that stretches from the base of your finger to the knuckle and sometimes beyond (which I love!).  It’s makes for such a dramatic statement and can be worn going out for a night on the town or even to work, giving your suit some personality.  Personally, I would slap this Vintage Sterling Silver Green Turquoise Ring from CrystalTown on with one of my Maxi dresses and Gladiator Sandals! A cool detail about this ring: “The makers mark is a bell hanging from a post and is the mark of Bell Trading Post. Bell Trading Post made Navajo jewelry in Albuquerque New Mexico from 1932 through the late 1980s.” Pretty neat little piece of history, I think!

Talk about big and beautiful! Don’t you just love this circular Vintage Silver and Turquoise Ring from Lucra?  It features beautiful tear drop shaped stones in a wonderfully aged setting that is adjustable to your finger.  The worn look only adds to this rings unique look and to me, increases the vintage value. Maybe not value in dollars, but value in its spirit, its history.  A bit on the heavy side, this ring will be the center piece of your outfit and will definitely be the accessory to dress around! But to the girl who can sport it, hats off as you will be sure to make a statement!

So usually I tend to gravitate toward the larger, more prominent turquoise rings, but I have to say that I was quite taken when I spotted this beautiful vintage SHADOW BOX Native American Ring from AnotherSeason. My obvious fascination being with the unique “shadow box” feature around the turquoise.  It really makes the stone pop and become seperated from the setting, therefore forcing it to be made the most important piece of the ring.  Which, as the stone and centerpiece it should be! I also adore the intricate etched detailing around the stone, which makes it pop even more.

This is another style of ring that I can’t seen to stop buying! The layered ring! Stones piled on top of stones! Delicious!  And I especially love this Vintage Native American Blossoming Ring from NeldasNook.  How adorable! I am swooning over the delicate turquoise flowers set in sterling silver! They make me smile every time I look at them! And I totally picture a hippie sporting this ring as she ran through the woods and bathed herself as she layed in grassy fields! Such a hippie statement and I love it!

Since we’re talking about obsessions today, let me tell you about another one of mine, the Owl! Yes, that curious creature called Owl who forever plaques my wallet wherever I go.  I don’t know if it’s the adorable eyes or those puffy cheeks that get me, but the owl is the quintessential hipster accessory that I find I can’t resist.  So, you can imagine how excited I was when I found a ring that combined both of my vintage obsessions.  This Vintage Owl Ring from TheOwlLady is uber-cute and I literally screamed when I saw it! This pewertone ring, with turquoise eyes is in great condition with no noticeable wear marks! Look at those eyes! How can you resist!

Weekend Wardrobe

It’s that time of the week again!  The time where I can get dressed up and go out for a night on the town and hopefully pop out a new outfit I haven’t tried before! I mean, isn’t that what we all love about the weekends?  Hanging out with your love and friends over drinks and good food, all gussied up looking stylish and confident, talking about your week and sharing laughs.  Finally breaking free of your work week, of all your required garb and schedules and being yourself with people you love being around.  It’s almost like a therapeutic regime that is essential to your weekend happiness.  Actually, just your happiness in general.  You have two days to play.  What are you going to do with them? Me, I’m going out. And I’m going out in this:

What am I wearing you ask?  Well, let me tell you!  The polkdot grey tunic that I am wearing (which by the way I love period because it has what ladies? POLKADOTS!) I picked up from Francesca’s for only $30 (which is amazing to me).  I’m sorry, but I just have to say that I love Francesca’s! Such amazing and stylish clothing with the added bonus of affordable prices! Anywho, I also love this top because it is super light and airy which makes it ridiculously comfy.  It feels like you’re not even wearing anything! And for someone like me who doesn’t like to wear things that are to tight, this dress is perfect.  It has a nice cut to it so even though it is drapey on your body it doesn’t make you look heavy. The other added bonus to this fabulous dress/tunic? POCKETS!!!  How do you not love something with pockets?

That awesome jacket you saw? It’s an upcycled vintage men’s jacket tailored for the ladies.  It’s actually an old Perry Ellis jacket I believe and the back flap was inserted and bordered with striped fabric by hand.  This is probably my favorite piece! I am totally in love with it and during the fall I pair it with anything I can.  I also adore the mismatched vintage buttons in the front and the inside pocket that I can so conveniently put my cell phone!  Since I hate carrying a purse half the time, these inside pockets defiantly come in handy!

Another favorite piece of mine? My awesome vintage Fedora that I picked up at some random vintage hole in the wall. I actually think it is a man’s hat, but I don’t care, it’s stupid cute and it fits my head! Correction, it fits if I wear my hair how it is pictured, otherwise it falls off my head! My boyfriend is constantly stealing it from me and tells all my friends it’s his! Always trying to take the glory!

My Mother’s Jewelry…

Home for the weekend I decided to roll up my sleeves and dig through the ocean that is my Mother’s Jewelry. A smorgasbord of vintage and modern my mom has amassed quite an impressive collection since the 70s and I do believe that she has yet to throw any of it out. Sure, there has been the occasional broken necklace strand and a too tarnished to save silver bangle and yes, I have stolen some…I mean borrowed….over the years, but even those exceptions have not made a dent. I wonder how much of it she even wears anymore or if she even thinks about how much of it she really has. I have to admit, it was quite fun to peddle my way through the endless nooks and crannies of boxes, vases and what other holding containers filled to the brim with pearls, clip-ons and bracelets. It was like being in a history class with my mom as the subject. I could see where she came from, where she had been and where she is now going. Knowing my mom had a whole other life before me fills me with a sensationable curiosity and I wonder what she was like when she was my age. I could ask her I guess, but that make take all the fun out of discovering it for myself. Back to digging..
